Marketing Momentum: The Key To Business Success

Marketing your business is a lot like riding a bicycle.

When you are just getting started, you have to use quite a bit of energy to get moving. But the work doesn’t stop once you’ve built up the momentum. You still need to pedal now and then, or you’ll drift to a stop and have to start all over again!

You want to reach that perfect cruising speed where you’ve figured out exactly how much effort you have to put in to keep progressing.

In marketing, that’s all about consistent effort, iteration, fine-tuning, and learning as you go.

It definitely won’t happen overnight – good things take time – but as long as you keep doing the right things, it will happen!

Read on to learn how to build marketing momentum and find that sweet spot to grow your business.

What Is Marketing Momentum?

The basic concept of momentum is that it often takes a large amount of effort to get something moving, but it takes less effort to keep it moving once you do.

This is what we are aiming for with marketing: getting exposure for our business and building our brand without having to continually expend huge amounts of energy in the process.

Marketing momentum happens when you figure out a way to make your content work for you. It takes a lot of measuring, tweaking, and learning to get there.

It’s about getting all the little things working together across all your channels – from blog posts and email newsletters to paid ads and social media stories.

What It Takes To Build Marketing Momentum

We know that to market effectively, we must produce content – things like blogs, videos, and visual or written content to post on social media.

So, you create all these amazing assets, post them, and wait for the views, likes, and customers to roll on in, right?

Good start. But producing good content isn’t enough.

To really make sense of the work you are putting in, you need to get strategic.

Ugh, sounds boring and complicated, right?

But consider this: according to CoSchedule, marketers who measure and record their processes are 466 percent more successful than those who don’t.

Not so boring now, is it!

And it’s not as hard as it sounds – you just have to know where to start.

How To Build Momentum

Here are five things you need to do to build valuable marketing momentum in your business:

Be Consistent

Consistency means staying true to your brand’s tone, voice, and design throughout all your marketing channels, regardless of what content you are publishing. As long as you can do this, your audience will continue to recognise you and your brand can keep growing even as you try different things.

Experiment

Numbers one and two may seem contradictory, but they can co-exist beautifully in marketing – you can experiment and stay consistent!

Even the best marketer on the planet can’t guarantee their content will instantly hit the right spot with their target audience – not without testing, anyway. Experiment with and test different content, designs, and channels (but maintain the consistency we talk about above), and measure everything you are doing. This will help you figure out what works best for your audience, and keep building your marketing momentum without wasting effort.

Fine-tune

Nothing’s ever perfect! Even if you manage to create epic content for your ideal customers, they will get bored if you don’t keep it fresh and exciting. Experimentation allows you to find what works and what doesn’t. You will be able to continually tweak your marketing to make it work for you.

Make sure you check your data and analytics to see what is working and what you can drop from your schedule. Postmore of the content that your audience love and ditch the things they don’t respond to or connect with.

Be Patient

From time to time, you might instantly hit the marketing jackpot. But more often than not, this will only happen when you put in the hard work. Take the time to get to know your audience inside out, painstakingly adjust your content, try new things, and keep putting your business out there without fail.

Eventually, all that hard work will pay off and you will have a well-oiled marketing strategy that requires minimal effort and energy to maintain.

Scale

Once you have got the data to back up your marketing plan, it’s time to scale! Woohoo! But don’t stress – this doesn’t mean you have to suddenly increase your output and post four times a day on Facebook or publish five blogs a week. Scaling up can mean scaling quality, not necessarily quantity (although if you know what works and have the resources, this might be something to consider!)

Scaling quality can mean using your data to figure out what’s working well, and increasing your investment in those areas.

Remember, scaling down is an option too. Once you have done the testing and measuring, you might find things that you can stop doing. If they have a small or even negative ROI, better to put them in the “been there done that” basket and focus your resources elsewhere.

Building A Momentum Strategy

As you can see, lots of moving parts are needed to build marketing momentum. But, with a well thought out strategy, you can get to the point where you are cruising along, the wind blowing in your hair, enjoying the fruits of that hard-out pedalling!
